Fasting and praying is an important part of the life of a Christian. However, for them to be effective we must understand the differences between fasting and praying under the old covenant of the law versus the new covenant of grace. Under the law prayer and fasting were all about earning something through self-effort; under grace they are all about casting out any unbelief we have and focusing on the finished works of Jesus. With this in mind, our attitude behind prayer and fasting should be about releasing the power and authority that God has already given us, not about asking Him to do something He has already done. Fasting and praying under the new covenant should be aimed at affecting our physical senses and bringing them back into alignment with God’s Word. The objective is to get them under subjection to our born-again spirits. Doing this enables us to consistently see supernatural results in our lives.
