On our Christian walk, the enemy tries to tempt us to choose idols to replace God in our lives, including the idol of ourselves. Idolatry is the value we give to a person or thing more than to God. There are many things in the world that are not necessarily bad until we idolize them. Neither is there anything wrong with loving others the way we love ourselves, until we place a higher priority on ourselves than on God. Most people no longer bow down to carved wooden statues, but are unknowingly worshipping at the altar of the god of self. Idolatry involves a tremendous amount of pride; practicing humility is the only way to subdue it. Deliberately and intentionally focusing on the things of heaven instead of on the things of earth keeps our priorities in order.
