Sin is a combination of evil ways of thinking, and began in the garden of Eden. It started with Adam and Eve’s unbelief when God warned them not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Unbelief progressed to self-righteousness, which led to condemnation and then fear, which caused sinful behavior. This is true even today, even for many believers. Our belief is critical; however, faith in what we do instead of in what Jesus has already done on the cross, is misguided. The root of all sin is a lack of trust in God. Trusting and relying on Him starts us off on the right path in life and makes us righteous in His eyes.
