When we decide to receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are immediately saved and made ready for heaven. This redeemed status is permanent and based on what Jesus did, not on what we do. We cannot save ourselves by our own goodness; neither can our lack of goodness “unsave” us. Reading the Bible in context reveals that unbelief in the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross to permanently secure our salvation is the only sin that cannot be forgiven. Understanding this difference saves us from guilt, shame, and self-condemnation when we fall short. As His people, God will never hold our past against us. Believing this gives us unshakeable security.
