When we pray, we are speaking to God. Most people understand prayer only on the surface level, yet there are several different levels of prayer. Studying God’s Word reveals that prayer can consist of praying in a language we understand, as well as in a deeper level of prayer that requires help from the Holy Spirit to transcend our own intellectual understanding. Tongues is a gift from Him, and empowers us by connecting us to spiritual realms we know nothing about in our natural minds. It can bring us wisdom and reveal previously unknown answers; it can unlock mysteries and hidden truths known only to God that help us solve problems we are struggling with. It is not in our best interest to fear or ignore praying in tongues simply because we do not understand it. Embracing it elevates us to a whole new level of communicating with God.
