Life as mankind knew it underwent a radical change from the Old to the New Testaments. Under the old covenant of the Law of Moses, the people were led by rules, regulations, and a number of prophets; that all changed when Jesus came and established the new covenant of grace. Now, instead of being led by inflexible laws given by flawed human beings, we have the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us. The difference between the old and the new is that before Jesus, people did not have the chance to get born again; they therefore lived under the law and were all guilty before God. By contrast, believers living under grace are no longer ruled by sin. If, as spiritual leaders, we do not rightly divide the truth in this area, we will fall back into rule-keeping; to teach those we lead how to walk with God, we must learn to walk with Him first. We have been entrusted to watch over people’s souls; a genuine relationship with Jesus allows us to do so.
