Believers who accept Jesus Christ—who is God’s grace in human form—have been delivered from sin and from the feeling of being judged and condemned. However, although Jesus dealt with this issue on the cross, condemnation is still possible for those who choose not to accept Him or believe in His finished works. Under the law, condemnation results when man fails to fulfill all its demands; it is harsh and strict, and calls for judgment and punishment. Jesus has replaced the law with grace, but unbelief puts us right back under the law. Condemnation used to be the result of failure to perform perfectly; it is now the result of a refusal to have faith in Christ. While our belief positions us to receive salvation and deliverance, unbelief moves us outside of the operations of God’s undeserved favor. Our faith in Jesus as the light we need in this spiritually dark world is therefore critical.
