Denying ungodliness and worldly lust involves changing our focus and moving it away from the things of the world. This is impossible through self-effort; we need the Holy Spirit’s help to do this. Worldliness is defined as a craving for, or an infatuation with, anything in the world associated with the five senses. To be worldly is to value these things above God. The allure of the world is strong; as born-again Christians, we must intentionally refuse things of the world while embracing the things of heaven. The Holy Spirit empowers us to do this by changing our desires so that we want to please God and do the right thing. Letting the Spirit do the work of transforming us from the inside out gives us the same character as Jesus Christ.
