To commune with the Holy Spirit means to get to know Him intimately. This type of relationship is important, because He is the administrator of the new covenant of grace under which we live. In this covenant, we need to believe in Jesus and His finished work; the Holy Spirit guides us and helps us to do that. A relationship with Him involves two-way communication and fellowship, which includes praying in the Spirit to sharpen our awareness of when He is speaking to us. God wants to converse with us all the time, not just at church, and He wants to teach us things about life that we could never discern on our own. The covenant of grace has many layers to it, and we need the Spirit of grace to take us through each one. Speaking in tongues is a vital.
