When we decide to receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are immediately saved and made ready for heaven. This redeemed status is permanent and based on what Jesus did, not on what we do. We cannot save ourselves by our own goodness; neither can our lack of goodness “unsave” us. We are saved by our faith in Jesus, not by our works; therefore, sin does not cause us to lose our salvation. Getting born again makes us new creations on the inside by removing our old, sinful natures; there is an important distinction between being sinful and committing a sinful act. Understanding this difference saves us from guilt, shame, and self-condemnation when we fall short. As believers who are the righteousness of God, the knowledge that our actions do not define who we are takes enormous pressure off of us.
